Not All That’s Gold, Glitters.

Looks like GG was less glamorous this time - and no, we’re not talking about Gossip Girl (although we’re all wishing we were). The GG I’m referring to is actually the 65th Annual Golden Globe awards that was recently celebrated - no wait, scratch that. It wasn’t so much of a celebration than a press conference. And that’s exactly what it was diminished to - a press conference.
“We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars,” Jorge Camara, president of the association, said in a statement.
There were, however, parties and some celebration for the winners after, but the red-carpeted, black-tied event itself did not go on, brought down by the threat of pickets from the Writers Guild of America and the vow from the members from the Screen Actors Guild not to cross those lines.
“It’s really lousy,” said Scott Rudin, a producer who has credits on “There Will Be Blood” and “No Country for Old Men,” both of which have been nominated for the Globes’ best drama award. He added: “A lot of us who make the kind of movies this group tends to reward have a lot of affection for them.”
It’s such a shame since Atonement lead the pack with seven nominations. The movie stars Leighton Meester’s favorite actress to impersonate, Keira Knightley. This is a huge deal for the movie’s lead actors. It’s James McAvoy’s first nomination as male lead and Keira Knightley’s second as a female lead.
Atonement won the top prize though, Best Picture, but the fans all groaned to the fact that we couldn’t see them in their full glory.
There are, however, people who thought that Atonement didn’t deserve the award. *gasp* Seriously, the film was beautiful and that’s why it surprised a lot of people when the actors were robbed of nominations for the Academy. Really - no nomination for Joe Wright for Best Director? What were they snorting?!
But it’s not just the fans and the actors that felt the loss…
Fashion designers did too.
“They’re very important for designers like me,” says dressmaker Monique Lhuillier, who had five frocks on hold for celebrities to wear on the carpet. “It’s the first (major) awards show in the season. It sets a lot of trends. People watch the show to see what’s happening.”
“What it means is, instead of me being booked, I might be doing one person or might be doing none,” says Christian Dior celebrity makeup artist Pati Dubroff, who was scheduled to work on a presenter. “It hurts everyone financially, down to the caterers and the valet parkers. I was talking to a driver and his business is affected.”
On the one hand, says Acra, “I support the cancellation of the Globes because I support the reason behind it. But it’s sad. It hurts when you’re a small (fashion) house that’s beginning to become a bigger brand. You just move on to the next thing.”
“It’s hurting a lot of people to not get paid for a whole weekend for work,” says Tim Quinn, Giorgio Armani’s celebrity makeup artist, who has gussied up Debra Messing, Glenn Close, Brooke Shields and Mary-Louise Parker. “Everyone was booked and ready to roll and had hotel rooms. It’s when makeup artists make the bulk of their money, during awards season.”
Plus, adds Quinn: “The Globes are one of the most fun awards shows to work on. The Oscars are much more serious.”

As much as I loved Atonement I wasn’t disappointed with the acting snubs. I thought that Saoirse Ronan was the only one in the cast that actually earned one. James McAvoy was ROBBED last year out of a nomination for The Last King of Scotland. The biggest surprise for me though with Atonement nominations, is that Joe Wright wasn’t nominated. I thought that he did a fabulous job and that Tony Gilroy shouldn’t even be in the category.
I still need to see Atonement at some point, so I’m not sure it was worthy of the nomination or not but I’m sure it was worth seeing by far.
i never thought of it from those points of view… great article!
lets hope the oscars go as planned and dont turn out to be another hushhush thing!
oh and for the record, atonement is STUNNING. PERFECT. EXACTLY as it should have been, which basically NO film adaptions nowadays are.
