Stroking The Strokes
Fri, Feb 01Posted by Willow S.
If you’re a major fan of Gossip Girl, you’d know that bad boy Chuck Bass is played a by real badass rocker, Ed Westwick - frontman of The Filthy Youth. Although scandalously and sexily British, it reminds a lot of us of another band whose members are equally as hot - New York’s own The Strokes.

Reptilia is sex. And garage rock has never sounded nor look as good as it does with The Strokes. No wonder they became famous in the UK even BEFORE they completed recording for their debut album.
This band is definitely the frontmen of today’s garage rock music revival. The raw unedited sound they produce is mostly laden with heavy guitar riffs and catchy drumbeats that made it seem like when lead singer Julian Casablancas’ sexy drunken voice comes in… it does so just to match his bandmates’ instruments. Their style is mostly compared to The Velvet Undergound but their lyrics are so deeply ludacris, they’ve taken it to a whole new level. This is all due credit to their main composer, guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. of course. Their biggest hits include Someday, Last Nite, Heart In A Cage and my personal favorite, Reptilia.
They’ve been in the cover of the modern rock n’ roll bible, the Rolling Stones mag where they’ve been titled “elegantly wasted”. Even their fashion style was carefully scrutinized. Critiques said that they deliberately dressed down to dress up. And that their I-don’t-care-about-fashion attitude was a statement of fashion itself. However, after watching their home videos, I think they’re pretty genuine in being the ultimate rockstars. Even the critiques agree that they were the saviors of rock n’ roll. They’ve lead the struggle against hip hop in the billboard charts (trust me - I’ve watched them).
Unlike a lot of bands (The Ramones included), they’ve been together since the beginning… having met each other from high school to college, later forming a band. To these guys, it’s all about the music. The good looks just came as a bonus.

I love The Strokes. There’s something about Julian’s husky voice that leaves me breathless after each song.
